Our mission is to stimulate the economy and the related job growth in the Houston region by protecting our low cost of housing and prohibiting unnecessary and restrictive land use regulations and ordinances that have undermined the economies of many cities across the nation over the past 30 years. Houston is a shining example of consumer driven and responsive growth. We will work to preserve Houston’s successful model of progress while being sensitive to issues that could result from increasing densities.
If you would like to help Houstonians for Responsible Growth in our mission, please sign up today [1] and we'll contact you to let you know how you can help.
We are a broad cross section of the people who will be affected by well-intentioned but destructive actions that have the effect of raising the cost of housing, undermining job creation and damaging the very economic strength that, today, makes Houston one of the most affordable major cities in the United States . Our membership includes bankers, architects, engineers, construction managers and workers, apartment owners, developers, residential and commercial real estate professionals and advocates for affordable housing.
We will collect existing research that demonstrates that prescriptive planning and land use fads over several decades have increased congestion, made housing all but unaffordable for low and moderate income citizens, caused job loss and a slowing of economic activity in many American cities. We will also commission independent research on the impacts of specific proposals that would impact the growth of Houston and share this research with elected officials and the public so that elected officials will have the benefit of the experience of other cities. We will highlight the unintended consequences of destroying the market driven growth that Houston currently enjoys and the impact of such actions on Houstonians at all economic levels.
Houstonians for Responsible Growth will work for continued affordable housing, certainty and predictability in building and planning regulations, an improved relationship between commercial and residential development and residential neighborhoods and prudent decisions by city leaders that preserve the benefits of progress and growth in the Houston area.
We will emphasize the interrelated nature of responsible growth and healthy job creation in Houston . We will research and report on the importance of a healthy tax base to provide essential services, strong educational opportunities and enhanced amenities as Houston becomes more densely populated. We will examine the effects of growth on congestion, our standard of living and our vibrant economy.
Houstonians for Responsible will work with elected officials, community leaders and the public to help chart a positive and constructive path that will provide rich opportunities for generations to come. We will constructively advise, provide intellectual resources and common sense solutions to the many challenges that Houston will face in the 21st Century .
