Land Use in Houston: Two Different Approaches
There has been much controversy recently about how to best use land within Houston. Decisions being considered within City Hall now may very well determine the direction and character of Houston’s growth in the future.
Local and National Experts and Leaders Discuss Houston’s Future
On the one hand, some neighborhood groups and others have strongly expressed reservations about greater population density and the development that accompanies it within the City limits. There have been calls for greater land use restrictions to preserve the character and quality of life within existing neighborhoods. Elected officials and planning staff have suggested growth and development ordinances that are now under consideration at City Hall.
On the other hand, some researchers warn that land use restrictions have backfired on cities across the nation and that ill-considered regulation may undermine the economic vitality of the City. Many believe that Houston has prospered because of a free market sensibility and argue that restrictions unfairly infringe on landowner rights without due compensation, increase housing costs and make all development decisions subject to unpredictable judgments at City Hall.
